Loneliness Is Killing Us: A Wake Up Call From Harare.

In the heart of Harare, I see it every day—young people walking into our pharmacy not just for pills, but for something deeper: connection. Loneliness is no longer just a feeling; it’s a silent epidemic. And it’s tearing through our communities like fire through dry grass.

The Hidden Pain Behind the Smile

Loneliness doesn’t always look like someone sitting alone. It’s the guy in Avondale who parties every weekend but feels empty inside. It’s the girl in Mbare who scrolls through Instagram, watching others live while she feels invisible. It’s the university student in Mt Pleasant who’s surrounded by classmates but hasn’t had a real conversation in weeks.

When relationships—romantic, family, or friendships—are missing, the heart starts to ache in ways medicine can’t fix. That ache often leads to dangerous paths.

From Loneliness to Despair

Here’s the brutal truth:

- Drug abuse is rising. I’ve dispensed cough syrup to teens who aren’t sick—they’re numbing emotional pain.

- Suicide is no longer rare. Just last month, a 24-year-old man from Kuwadzana took his life. His WhatsApp status had read, “No one would notice if I disappeared.”

- Depression and anxiety are rampant. But many suffer in silence, fearing judgment or being labeled “weak.”

Why Is This Happening?

- Urban isolation: In Harare, we’re more connected online than in real life.

- Economic pressure: Unemployment and poverty make people feel worthless.

- Cultural stigma: Talking about emotions is still taboo, especially for men.

- Broken families: Divorce, migration, and death have left many without support systems.

Healing Starts With Habits

We can’t fix everything overnight, but we can start small. Here’s how:

- 🗣️ Talk to someone—a friend, a pastor, a counselor. Silence is deadly.

- 🤝 Join a community—church groups, sports clubs, book clubs. Belonging heals.

- 📵 Limit social media—it often fuels comparison and isolation.

- 🧘🏽‍♂️ Practice mindfulness—even 10 minutes of quiet reflection helps.

- 💌 Reach out—send a message to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. You might save a life.

Loneliness is real. But so is hope. Let’s choose connection. Let’s choose life.
